Sportify is an interactive data visualization project built using the Spotify Music Data Billboard Top Songs 2010 to 2019 dataset. The project is driven by the idea that music can enhance workout performance when its tempo aligns with a person’s movement intensity or heart rate, yet most people, including my teammates and me as runners, still rely on generic playlists that do not adapt to different training needs. Sportify addresses this by visualizing music in three ways. It organizes songs by workout zone to show how tempo and energy shift across warm up, peak effort, and cooldown phases. It groups songs by workout type to highlight how musical attributes support different forms of movement such as strength training, steady runs, or recovery sessions. And lastly, it presents songs by workout vibe through a visual quiz that helps users discover music based on how they want their workout to feel.
The of this visualization project is to test the hypothesis that aligning activity intensity with music BPM and audio features can improve pacing, performance, and enjoyment. By transforming structured music data into intuitive visual insights, Sportify solves the original pain point of inefficient trial and error playlist building and creates a more personalized and performance driven listening experience.
**All visualizations and work presented in this portfolio were created independently by me. While this project was developed in collaboration with teammates, only my individual contributions are displayed here.

It is common for both athletes and non athletes to feel unsure about how or where to begin when choosing music for a workout...
Sportify presents three ways to approach music selection, with visualizations designed to help users discover songs that align with their activity level, goals, and desired workout experience.
1
By Workout Zone
If you understand your training zones and how different intensity levels feel. As your effort shifts from warm up to peak to cooldown, your music should shift too. The visualization organizes songs by zone to show how tempo and energy align with low, moderate, and high intensity heart rate ranges.
2
By Workout Type
If you know your workout but not your music, start here. Select your workout type to explore songs filtered by BPM and energy, where higher energy values reflect faster and louder tracks. This helps you match tempo and intensity to the physical demands of your session.
If you are new to working out or simply want to choose music based on how you feel right now, start here. Designed as a visual quiz, this view organizes songs by vibe, helping you discover tracks that match the emotional experience you want from your workout.
